9. Mugio Kogarasu Shrine and the Northern Foothills of the Minoh Mountains

Nestled within a forest on the slopes of the Minoh Mountains, Mugio Kogarasu Shrine offers a unique experience. During the festivals in April and October, the shrine's main hall and the stone shrine by side are connected by a wooden board, on which the priest sits to perform the rituals.

10. Jōgyō-ji Temple and its Surroundings

Located to the west of the center of Tanushimaru, Jōgyō-ji is a Buddhist temple with a long history. In December, local residents gather to create "Okesoku," a traditional flower decoration made by stacking rice cakes in an intricate pattern, for the Hōonkō festival.

11. Moriyama Aso Shrine and the Northern Foothills of the Minoh Mountains

Behind the shrine hall stands a magnificent camphor tree, believed to be over 1,500 years old. In September, the tree is climbed by designated individuals to replace the shimenawa (sacred straw rope). The sheer size of the tree makes the climbers appear dwarfed in comparison.

12. Mugio Yagura Hachiman Shrine and the Northern Foothills of the Minoh Mountains

In July, this shrine comes alive with the excitement of the Shishi-mai (lion dance). After the ritual, the lion head is held up to the shrine and roared, followed by racing around the shrine. The lion is then taken to various intersections in the area, where children can have their heads bitten by the lion for good health and well-being. The reactions of the children vary widely, with some crying loudly, while others remain calm and unfazed.

13. Nuda Tenmangu Shrine and Surroundings

Nuda Tenmangu Shrine holds the "Fūchin-sai" or “Kaze-dome” in July, a ritual to ward off wind and water damage. During this festival, new flags are raised to ward off evil spirits. Here, the tradition of climbing trees to secure the flagpole to the top is still practiced. Additionally, bamboo poles wrapped with straw on the top are erected at the borders of the district as a further measure of protection.

14. Amida-ji Temple and the Center of Tanushimaru

Amida-ji Temple, originally located in the Maki district, west of Tanushimaru, was relocated to its current location in the center of Tanushimaru Town in 1913. This temple is dedicated to praying for the good health and well-being of children. In March, a fire-walking ritual and a child-guarding prayer ceremony are held, while in August, “Shōrō-nagashi (floating lantern)” ceremony takes place on the Hibari River in front of the temple.

15. Kuma Itsu-hashira Shrine and the Persimmon Fields along the Approach Path

This shrine is unique for the persimmon fields that line both sides of the approach path. In autumn, the vibrant red leaves of the persimmon trees create a spectacular sight as visitors make their way to the shrine hall. The name "Itsu-hashira" means “five pillars”, referring to the five deities enshrined here.

16. Nonaka Tenman Shrine and the Smoke of the Dōgomori

On November 30th, not only at this shrine but also at many shrines in Tanushimaru, a welcoming fire is lit to welcome the deities who have been visiting Izumo Taisha Shrine. This ritual is called "Dōgomori." Unfortunately, due to strong winds on the day of filming, the fire was smaller than usual. In the "Kaze-dome" (Wind Calming Festival) in July, as in other districts, gohei (sacred paper streamers) are placed at the borders of the district to ward off evil spirits.
